Tips for a healthy first month of pregnancy
Whether you’re trying to conceive or just found out you’re expecting, these tips will help keep you and your baby-to-be healthy and happy:
- Start taking prenatal vitamins
As soon as you decide it’s time to start a family, talk to your doctor about adding a prenatal vitamin to your daily routine. Be sure to select one with at least 400 micrograms of folic acid to help prevent certain birth defects of baby’s brain, heart and spine. - Quit using tobacco and alcohol
Smoking, drinking and using drugs are not only harmful for you, but they can cause serious harm to a fetus. Not only do these things expose your baby to harmful chemicals, they may cause birth defects, miscarriage, preterm labor or stillbirth. Talk to your doctor if you need help quitting. - Eat a healthy diet
It is important to maintain a healthy diet to ensure you and your baby are healthy. Try to incorporate folate and iron-rich foods, vitamin B6, fruits and dairy. Carbohydrates and non-complex (natural) sugars are also important for helping you boost your daily calories. You’ll need at least an extra 200-300 calories per day to make a healthy baby.
